About Us

The Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick (PLEIS-NB) was created in 1989 as a joint initiative of the Law Reform Branch of the New Brunswick Department of Justice and the New Brunswick Law Society. They recognized the need for people in New Brunswick to have a trustworthy place to turn for information about the law and legal processes. PLEIS-NB incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1990 and received charitable status in 1996.

In its early days, PLEIS-NB created pamphlets, a video lending library, workshops, training sessions, and a speaker’s bureau program. Since its humble beginnings, PLEIS-NB has created over 300 publication titles in English and French. These have included titles translated into Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, and braille. They have included everything from audio tapes to websites to self-help guides.

Today, we work collaboratively with government, the legal sector, and community organizations to close the gaps between the justice system in the public. Our ultimate goal is to increase access to justice for New Brunswickers by creating accurate, accessible, high quality information and educational programs about the law.

FamilyLawNB is our website dedicated specifically to our materials about family law. This website was developed with project funding from Justice Canada. It is maintained through core funding from Justice Canada, the New Brunswick Department of Justice, and the New Brunswick Law Society.
