Effective March 1, 2021, changes to the federal Divorce Act and the New Brunswick Family Law Act will come into force. The legislation changes to the Divorce Act and Family Law Act will replace several terms with more child-focused terminology. The amendments will also introduce new parenting terminology such as “parenting orders” and “decision-making responsibility”, replacing former legal terms like “custody” and “access”.
PLEIS-NB has produced a guide to help explain the changes to the legislation. This new booklet will replace a former PLEIS-NB publication titled “Custody and Access in New Brunswick” that explained the law and rules with the terminology under former versions of the Divorce Act and the Former New Brunswick Family Services Act.
